Route 66
Diner
It's been called America's Highway and I have been lucky enough to travel quite a bit it. In 2012 Tom and I stayed in one of the original Route 66 motels and it was a blast. It took me back to my childhood when my family used to go on vacations, and we would stay in the one story motels that had the individual parking space in front of your room. This motel was exactly the same, and it even had the old plastic, diamond shaped keychain with the number engraved on it. The decor inside the room even reflected the time, with the exception of the flat screen television. After we checked in, we drove down the road and I couldn't help but think of the history I was passing, and how many people drove the exact same road as they made their way to California, perhaps to pursue a dream, or to find a better life than the one they had left behind. I photographed the abandoned businesses, restaurants, and gas stations, and thought about the past and how these buildings and streets were once full of life, full of people and a part of America that we sadly don't have anymore. But all is not lost as the mother road has many great people that have not only made sure its rich past is not forgotten, but that it has a place in the present. Today more and more people are traveling Route 66, some of them looking for a more simple life, while others, perhaps are looking for a connection to the past. Whatever the reason is, this grand highway is growing in popularity again, and that makes me smile. Now all I need is a convertible that I can put the top down, turn up Nat King Cole on the radio and really get my kicks on Route 66.
Above is the Route 66 diner in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Great throw back to the diners from the 50's and 60's. Stop in and have some traditional diner food or a great tasting hamburger with the works. And don't forget to top it off with a malt.
